The Missing Layer: A Mattress Pad Built for Shallow Pocket Home, Boat, RV and Dorm Beds

If you have ever made up a bed on a boat, in a camper, in a dorm room or on a split adjustable base, you know the particular frustration. You buy a quality mattress pad, you wrestle it over a thinner mattress, and the elastic skirt just hangs there in loose folds, because the pad was cut for a mattress twice as thick as yours. Then you put a sheet over the whole mess and spend the night sleeping on a ridge.

That problem is the reason CinchFit exists, and it is the reason we just added the piece that was missing from the system.

Why standard bedding fails on a thinner mattress

Most bedding is designed around one assumption: that your mattress is somewhere between 12 and 18 inches deep. That is a fair assumption for a bedroom. It is completely wrong for a boat bed, an RV bunk, a camper dinette conversion or a dorm mattress, which often run 5 to 9 inches.

When you put deep pocket bedding on a shallow mattress, the excess fabric has to go somewhere. It bunches under the corners, it balloons at the sides, and it works loose in the night. On a boat there is the added insult that your mattress probably is not a rectangle at all.

How CinchFit Shallow Pocket Sheets solve it

The cinching closure then draws the sheet in underneath, so instead of relying on a stretched elastic hem to grip a mattress it was never sized for, the sheet actually tightens to the shape of your bed.

The layer that was missing

Sheets solved the fit. They did not solve everything else a thinner mattress has to survive.

Boat, RV and dorm mattresses live hard lives. Damp swimsuits, spilled coffee on a rolling sea, salt air that never quite leaves, condensation under a cushion against a cold hull, and in a dorm room, everything that happens in a dorm room. These mattresses are also usually firmer and thinner than what you sleep on at home.

A mattress pad should fix both of those things. The trouble is that every mattress pad on the shelf comes with the same deep elastic skirt that made your sheets fail, which puts you right back where you started.

So we made one without it.

Meet the Shallow Pocket Mattress Pad & Protector

Our new Shallow Pocket Mattress Pad & Protector has no skirting at all. It is a flat, generously filled, diamond quilted pad that simply lies on top of your mattress, edge to edge. Your CinchFit sheet then cinches down over it and locks the whole stack together.

No fighting a too-deep pocket over a thin mattress. No bulk shoved under the corners. No pad crawling out from under the sheet by morning. And because it lifts straight off, you can wash it without stripping the entire bed, which matters when the bed is wedged into a bow or stacked as a bunk and you have to climb in to make it.

Not just for the water

The same no-skirting design turns out to solve a problem at home too. Split adjustable bases are notorious for chewing up bedding: a skirted pad bunches the moment the head end lifts, then works its way loose over a few nights of position changes.

So the pad comes in Split Top Queen, Split Top King and Split Top Cal King, each with a 35 inch split so the head end moves freely, and in Split King as two separate pads, one for each side of the base. Hand sewn, which is the whole point

Each pad is finished and hand sewn in our own American workroom, by the same hands that make our CinchFit sheets. That is not a sticker we bought. It is precisely why the pad can be cut to shallow pocket, split top and V Berth shapes that the large bedding mills do not offer and will not tool up to make. Nobody mass produces bedding for a tapered bow mattress or a split adjustable base. We do, one at a time.
